Boston Pizza Red Sox

For two consecutive years, the Red Sox have been stung in the finals by the 3-time defending champion Orioles.  In 2005, the Red Sox look to end a drought that began after the 1984 season.  Only Frank Valente remains from that year, though many of the current Sox players have endured years of mediocrity and disappointment.  2004 was a prime example in which the Sox finished the regular season 13-13 (3rd place), swept the A’s 3 games to none in the semi-finals and were swept 4 games to none in the finals.  The first three games of those finals had the Sox on the wrong side of 6-5 scores.  A virtually unchanged roster, bolstered by some key additions, has the Sox poised to make a run at the league title of the TBSBA.

Adding to the Sox potent roster is rookie Adam Roos.  A pitcher at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Adam will join free agent Doug Elo (formerly of the A’s) in bolstering an already strong rotation.  The Sox also welcome the return of Grant Lilley from a one year hiatus in BC.  Lilley will provide depth at every position and, along with Roos & Elo, add another solid bat to the lineup.

This year’s pitching staff will also include Chris Tanzola (3 wins, 2.80 ERA – 2004), Jay Buitenhuis (2 wins, 2.42 ERA), Mark Rich (2004 Sox Rookie of the Year), Jesse Slobojan, Dave Janhunen, Myles Ball and Wes Richards, with Dan Grant serving as the closer.  The lineup remains intact, led by 2004 Sox MVP Grant (.391, 3 HR, 10 RBI), who will share the catching duties with Wes Richards (.396).  The outfield will consist of Janhunen (17 runs, 10 stolen bases), Frank Valente (HR, 10 RBI, 18 runs), Greg Johnsen (10 RBI), Mike Toderash, Pat Shoppoff (.328, 9 RBI) and Roos.  The infield will be made up of Jason Cooper, Ball (.413, 2 HR, 11 RBI), Ryan Latta, Lincoln Galbraith, Rich (.357, HR, 10 RBI), Slobojan (12 RBI) and Tanzola.  If the Sox can finally play consistent defensive baseball, the team will have a chance to win the division crown and potentially a TBSBA championship.

In 2004, members of the Sox also travelled to Minneapolis, MN, over the Labour Day weekend, to play in the Twin City Classic.  Despite strong, complete game pitching performances by Slobojan, Tanzola and Buitenhuis, the Sox contingent lost all three 9-inning round robin games.  The Sox look to reverse their fortunes in 2005.  The tournament will again be held in Minneapolis over the Labour Day weekend.

The Red Sox invite all players, fans, friends, and families of the TBSBA to visit with our great sponsor, Boston Pizza, located at 505 Memorial Avenue.
